Frozen Winter Share
4 months--December through March
Featured on Lynn Rossetto Kasper\'s \"The Splendid Table\"
Frozen Winter Shares:
These shares will include around a 160 packages of blanched and frozen vegetables. 4 deliveries (December, January, February and March) with around 40 packages in each delivery. 40 packages will fill a regular 1 1/9 bushel box.
The packages are vacuum sealed in 1/2 pound serving packages (for most items). Included in the mix will be: basil, beans, beets, brocolli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, sweet corn, eggplant, fennel, kale, melons, peas, peppers, summer squash, chard, tomatoes, turnips, and winter squash.
Those that have received these shares in the past know how wonderful it is to have local, organic vegetables in the cold months of winter. Please note: the number of shares that we sell is very limited. I encourage you to sign up sooner than later.
Here are a few things folks are saying about the Frozen winter share:
* In the middle of winter, in the middle of west central Minnesota, it\'s impossible to find good, quality, locally grown vegetables in the grocery store. The ones that are there are shipped from other parts of the country and are never as good as what you get during the growing season and can be much more expensive. And the selection doesn\'t include nearly as much variety as what you get from a CSA. How refreshing to be able to enjoy vegetables that were grown on a local, organic farm during the middle of winter!!
* For those of us who don\'t have the time or the knowledge and skill to can, freeze, and preserve our own vegetables or we don\'t have a garden of our own from which to do so, these frozen vegetables from Ploughshare are perfect! Not everybody has a garden, or the time and skill to preserve their own food. To have that option from a local, organic farm is amazing!
* Ploughshare goes to great lengths to make the Frozen Share convenient for the members. Each vegetable is vacuumed-sealed in a well-labeled package and it\'s already in the perfect serving size for a meal. Just take it out, heat it up, and you\'re ready to enjoy sustainably-produced vegetables in the middle of winter!
* The Frozen Share is a great way to extend our relationship with the farm and farmers that grow our food. Our interactions are no longer limited to the growing season, they extend throughout the entire year and I think that\'s a great benefit in itself. My monthly trip to the farm to pick up my frozen share out of the walk-in cooler at Ploughshare is a highlight. Not many people are making trips out to a farm in the middle of winter, and therefore, not many people are making connections about where their food comes from in the winter.
* Speaking of not making connections to where our food comes, what a great teaching tool the Frozen Share is! It shows people how it\'s possible to prepare for the winter months when food can\'t be grown outdoors in the field. It makes people think about the farms and farmers who grow our food in this part of the country, and what needs to be done if we want to enjoy their produce for the entire year. It\'s just one example of how we can continue to eat locally during the winter.
* It\'s a great deal! I think it is much, much cheaper to get the amount of vegetables (organic and locally grown nonetheless!) from Ploughshare during the winter months, than it would be to buy the equivalent amount at the grocery store.
* It\'s another way to support Ploughshare financially, throughout the year, instead of just during the growing season. It not only provides us with the Frozen Share, but it helps keep the farm going and gives them some much needed income during the off-season. It gives us another opportunity to build relationships with people around food. We split our frozen share with a different couple than we split our summer share with. So it\'s another connection/relationship being built around food. Community building at its best!
* AND... it\'s simply FUN! And good for us!
Price:
* Full Frozen Share is $725
* 1/2 Frozen Share (same variety- half as many packages) is $515.
* 1/4 Frozen share (same variety--one quarter the amount) is $405. Please consider this a \"sample amount.\"

Best of all, our growing practices are similar toGary’s – we maintain our rich soil with compost, rotate our crops, and never use synthetic pesticides. Buying local from Prairie Garden Farm means not having to worry about chemical residues, unfair labor practices, or the petroleum used to ship flowers half-way around the world.
